Hello and Boozhoo! My name is Maggie, and I am very honored to have the position of Peer Navigator and HIV Tester with Harm Reduction Sisters. I grew up here in Duluth, but rambled around the country for years before realizing that this town and this land is sacred. It's truly where I am meant to be. I now live on the hillside with my fella and my wise old pup, Mae. I count my blessings to be here.
Without harm reduction services being available to me, I wouldn't be alive, today. I'm an overdose survivor, and thanks to Naloxone I'm here to give back what I can to the community. Each day I strive to find the beauty in this wild world. I can say from experience how much of a difference it makes to receive safer injection supplies and accessible health care - including mobile HIV, Hep C and Syphilis testing. At the time, I was taken aback that folks genuinely cared about my well-being , but after connecting with harm reduction communities I felt empowered, understood, less isolated, and it lifted the crushing shame off my back that I had been carrying for quite some time. It was only then that I felt ready to pivot, and a whole new world of opportunities opened up for me. I want to share that hope, so people can feel confident that a loving community "has their back", and so they can achieve the goals they set for themselves.
I'm inspired and humbled by the incredible team I work with, and those I work alongside with as participants. When we stand together, hold gentle space to uplift each other, keep each other safe, and accept that every path is unique, we can make radical changes in this world.
